Kurt Russell in The Christmas Chronicles (2018)

Plot (from IMDB): The story of sister and brother, Kate and Teddy Pierce, whose Christmas Eve plan to catch Santa Claus on camera turns into an unexpected journey that most kids could only dream about.

Score:
Scoring Notes: generally a +5 is the highest I will give a component. A -5 is the lowest. If it goes beyond that, then you know I am quite serious

Cast
+5 for Kurt Russell
+3 for making it a Russell family movie (including step-son and step grand son; etc…)
+5 for very good child actors
+3 for Kimberly Williams-Paisley

Plot
+5 for the general plot.
+5 for showing character growth of the children
-2 for a plot point (Minor Spoiler, so will leave in the comments).

Writing/Directing/Soundtrack, etc.
+15 because the writing, directing, and soundtrack were spot on.

Other:
+5 for a snarky Santa Claus who doesn’t Ho-Ho-Ho – but not a mean Santa. Just more… realistic and less dream like.

+5 for diversity

+5 for the quote:
“Can’t you just wave your hand, and like, Jedi mindtrick the cops?”
“I’m Santa Claus, Teddy, not Yoda.”

+10 for two other quotes that I noted; but um – and this is not a reflection on the movie at all but of how tired I was – I fell asleep and now don’t remember them and they aren’t online.

+5 because now all the Christian preachers all over America have a sermon prompt from the movie (No, seriously, I would be disappointed to learn that *no-one* writes a sermon about this particular plot point).

+5 for Family Friendliness (I’m not sure why its rated TV-PG and not TV-G – I think its because of a few things that are more there for the adults watching the movie, but I honestly couldn’t see anything objectionable in the movie).

Commentary: One of my movie loving friends has stated that this might just be her favorite Santa Claus themed movie ever. I would definitely agree that if I were a child this would be *my* Santa movie that I would remember for the rest of my life – but nostalgia is winning for me so “my” movies are still in the top spot. The same movies that I’ve put off re-watching because I don’t want them to fall from those top spotsĀ

Final Score: 76
