Kat Graham and Quincy Brown in The Holiday Calendar (2018)

Plot (from IMDB): A struggling but talented photographer inherits an antique holiday advent calendar, the contents of which seem to predict the future. Will this magical calendar lead her to love this holiday season?

Score:
Scoring Notes: generally a +5 is the highest I will give a component. A -5 is the lowest. If it goes beyond that, then you know I am quite serious

Cast:
+5 for Ron Cephas Jones
+3 for Quincy Brown (who was super charming)
+5 for Kevin Hanchard – WHO I DIDN’T EVEN REALIZE WAS IN THE MOVIE.
+2 for Kat Graham (She was charming but I didn’t feel like she owned the role)

Plot:
+2 for a decent enough plot.

Writing/Directing/Soundtrack/Etc:
-3 for {SPOILER} – If you want to know, I will tell you.
+3 for being better than average for a tv movie

Other:
+7 for a diverse cast (the heroine is mixed race and there are two “heroes” in the movie: one white; one black).
+3 would watch again

Commentary: Its a cute enough movie. If you like the Hallmark type movies, you’ll enjoy this. Its refreshing to see a much more diverse cast – this isn’t a “White” movie or a “Black” movie. Also Advent was never a thing in my house growing up; but I felt a bit of a twinge how it was referred to as a Holiday calendar and not an Advent calendar. So there is that. And then there is the plot point that caused the -3 rating. But its a major spoiler. It lessened the overall charm of the movie. But yes; I’d recommend it. And yes I’d watch it again.

Total Score: 27
