I started with this one because its was one that I had readily available that was outside of the MCU. (I decided to watch the MCU in order.) This is my favorite out of the “First Class” trilogy.
Spoilers in Post: Yes (Mild)
Release Type: Theatrical
Plot: It is the near future and the X-Men and the world are in trouble. Enter Kitty Pryde and her Timey-Wimey powers and Wolverine’s near immortal powers for a blast to the 70’s to prevent future catastrophe.
Scoring Notes: generally a +5 is the highest I will give a component. A -5 is the lowest. If it goes beyond that, then you know I am quite serious
+50 for the cast. One of the strengths of the X-Men movies has been the brilliant casting of Patrick Stewart, Hugh Jackman, and Sir Ian McKellen. Combine that with the strength of the younger version cast, and we have movies with acting gold.
Production (Writing/Directing/Soundtrack, etc):
+3 for Writing. This is purely subjective. The writing is on par with most superhero movies.
+4 for Plot
+3 for Directing
+0 for Stan Lee’s Cameo: *sigh* There wasn’t one.
+2 for the End Credit’s Scene: I remember the first time I saw it I was a bit confused. But it caused me to look up the story behind it. The scene wasn’t all that interesting; but they do get points for actually having one.
+1 for diversity. I was pleasantly surprised that a number of the mutants shown in the beginning are the mutants featured in the tv show The Gifted. It hadn’t realized this and while I don’t really like the show The Gifted; they do have a more diverse cast. Sadly, the movie doesn’t really continue to show a great deal of diversity past the opening scenes; however I’ll give it a point for what we do see.
+1 for family friendliness. It’s rated PG-13 on purpose; so some families won’t have any issues with it; while some will (Note: there is a naked bum in the movie).
+3 for the quote: “You and I are gonna be good friends… you just don’t know it yet. “
+5 for the quote:
“They told me you control metal. ”
“You know, my mom knew someone who could do that.”
Overall Score: 72
